Under the flashbulb, out of the sun: Cannes is beyond the pale

What's not to like about the Cannes film festival except, perhaps, the films? One week in and the clothes have been a five-star blockbuster, with far more action, adventure and all-out indie verve than a lifetime of stalking the red carpet at the Oscars could ever yield.

Granted, Cannes has its tacky side, too. The Hot d'Or, that gathering of the movers and fluffers of the porn industry that used to run concurrently is no more, but its legacy lives on in numerous nooks, crannies and terraces of La Croisette.

Yet for every zealously enhanced cleavage casting shadows on the sand, there is a genuine class act: from Carey Mulligan, Jessica Chastain and Marion Cotillard to the fashion desk's current intriguing new crush, Louise Bourgoin.
